Wilderness Survival Camp is Back at The Discovery Center...

Wilderness Survival Camp:
Jan. 4-8, 2010

How well are your children prepared to stay safe in the outdoors? Would they know what to do if they were ever lost or stranded in the woods - without a cell phone? Wilderness Survival Camp at The Discovery Center is a fun way for your kids to learn important safety information while enjoying the outdoors. They'll learn tips like trail-marking, leaving "lost signs," and even first aid tips.

We have tons of hands-on activities planned for Wilderness Survival Camp this January 4-8, 2010. Joining us will be special guests from the Search and Rescue team at Yosemite Parks and Fire Fighter Jake to teach us about water safety. Download registration forms now.

Your kids will learn how to survive in the cold. They'll learn how to be their own weatherman as they look for storm signs. Some of the day's activities include making their own "hover bubbles" and false liquid nitrogen.

Today, your kids will go on an exciting scavenger hunt while they learn to use a compass. We'll teach them how to find drinking water and ways to make it safe to drink. They'll use a microscope to examine water from our own Walden Pond. Fire Fighter Jake will be our guest speaker on water safety.
  • Wednesday, January 6, 2010
We'll explore the Native American Indian tribes that lived on our Valley floor, including the Yokuts. Campers will learn how they survived off the land. How do you make a boat out of reeds? How do you make acorns edible? Kids will find these answers and much more!
  • Thursday, January 7, 2010
On this day of Wilderness Survival Camp, your kids will learn first aid tips to use out in nature. We'll show them what to do if they ever get lost in the woods, and how to build a winter structure if they ever find themselves without shelter.
  • Friday, January 8, 2010
What kinds of animals live out in the woods? On the final day of camp, your kids will learn how to identify animals by their tracks, as well as their scat. They'll make their own binoculars and take them on a fun wilderness hike. Guest speakers will include members of the Search and Rescue team from Yosemite Park.
