This month, I am pleased to share with you the many exciting changes we’ve been making at The Discovery Center. As a result of one of these changes, this will be my last message as President of the Board of Directors. I was recently able to leave my current day job, enabling me to spend more time at The Discovery Center and move to the position of Executive Director. I am very excited to be working with our new Executive Board President Gary Pigg, and to be able to spend more time watching your children enjoy learning at our park.
Another exciting change will be taking place at our Rossler Winery. We have recently received a generous donation of some metal shelving from the Court of Appeals, which we will be installing during our big park clean up day on August 25th. We will need lots of help getting our grounds ready for the new school year, and we certainly hope you will be able to join us.
As we gear up for the new school year, we’ve also made some changes to our curriculum. We are now offering some one-hour classes for field trips. These longer classes will give us more time to the incorporate hands-on learning that we believe is so important to science education. We are also developing a guidebook filled with lessons and educational projects which teachers will be able to use in the park and in their classrooms.
For families, we’ve also got an exciting school year lined up. Starting the first Saturday in September, we’ll be kicking off our Saturdays in the Park series. Each weekend, you and your children can come to our grounds and enjoy some of the fun, hands-on lessons we use during fields trips, birthday parties, and camps. We hope to add even more activities as word about Saturdays in the Park spreads! We certainly hope you’ll pack your family a picnic lunch, and come join us for our first event this September.
Warmly,
Janet Berry
President
