This month, we are taking your child on a wild learning adventure with the fun activities and articles we've come up with. As a participant in Cub Scouts for many years, I thought I had heard and done it all, but starting a fire with a soda can was even new to me! I hope that you will be able to use this issue to enjoy some educational fun in the wilderness with your own family this summer.
I would also like to use this issue to encourage you to consider getting involved with The Discovery Center's Board of Trustees as we elect new board members this August. If you have never served on a non-profit board, and have been looking for a way to give back, I would encourage you to consider joining us. Serving on The Discovery Center's board is a wonderful way to support education in your community.
Our Board Treasurer Gary Pigg has helped update and revamp our accounting procedures at the center. His contributions have made our system more up-to-date, usable. His system has allowed us to consistently save time and money while providing all of our important learning activities. Gary has found serving on the board to be a wonderful way to develop a love of learning and a sense of confidence in the children of the Central Valley.
"The Discovery Center provides an opportunity for children to engage with adults on projects," Gary said. "Young people are capable of doing more things once they realize they have permission to contribute. At The Discovery Center kids are encouraged to participate and take on different responsibilities; not as passive listeners, but as active participants."
The board is very hands-on and involved with the center's operations. We meet once a month to discuss strategies, plans, and policy to help support The Discovery Center's advancement and growth. Board members also assist with special events, grounds cleanup, and general improvements on our property.
"People who should become involved are people who like start-up activities," Gary said. "The board is for entrepreneurs at heart."
The current board members come from a variety of backgrounds, making for very dynamic round table discussions with different experiences and perspectives. This year's board has worked very well together, and has found great satisfaction in knowing that our efforts are making a difference in children's' lives.
"We need members who have a commitment to youth, and are willing to put their own creativity, time, and financial resources toward growing The Discovery Center," says Gary.
Personally, I couldn't agree more. If you are committed to bettering the lives of the Valley's children, please contact me by email, or leave a message at 559-251-5533. I would be more than happy to answer all of your questions about getting on board with us, or to meet with you over lunch or at our next board meeting!
Warmly,
Janet Berry
