We do! Sign up for a Musical Trash class at The Discovery Center! We strive to teach children all about nature, and how to conserve and protect it! We know that recycling helps the planet, and can be lots of fun when we use recycled materials to make our own musical instruments!
Musical Trash is a class that focuses on the three R's: Reuse, Reduce, and Recycle! We help children understand the importance of recycling by teaching them how reusing recyclable materials helps to reduce the amount of waste on our planet. In this class, students learn about how long the things we throw away sit before decomposing. While even natural items such as a banana will take three to four weeks to biodegrade, man-made materials such as a plastic milk jug will take nearly a million years to disintegrate.

With limited space available on our planet for these items, it is incredibly important that children learn to recycle at an early age. This is why The Discovery Center shows kids how to make recycling fun in our musical trash class. "One of my favorite Discovery Center classes is 'Musical Trash'," said Discovery Center Educator Gioia Frank. "It teaches kids and parents about the three R's of the environment: reduce, reuse and recycle. It also gives us an opportunity to demonstrate how important it is to protect our world."
By taking items that take hundreds of years to disintegrate and making them into musical instruments, kids can have fun while recycling. We'll take some of the most problematic materials, including tin and aluminum cans, plastic jugs and 6-pack rings, and Styrofoam cups and make them into fun toys for children to use to learn about music in addition to recycling.
In the class, students make a chicken squawker using plastic cups, a bit of string, and a piece of sponge. They'll also get to make a drum using tin cans and balloons. Finally, they'll create a tambourine using pie pans, string, and the soda pop tabs from aluminum cans.
Every Saturday in January, our fun-filled "Saturday Science" in the park sessions will feature fun activities from the Musical Trash class. From 12 to 3 pm each Saturday, The Discovery Center's educators will be on hand to teach guests to the park all about the importance of recycling with some fun activities. For a suggested donation of $3 per child, your children can experience all of The Discovery Center's exciting park exhibits in addition to the fun recycling activities.
